The 2nd Scottish Rifles battalion of 23 Brigade, 8th Division arrived in France with the rest of the division on 5th November, 1914 and first moved into the trenches on 14th November, south-west of Messines. On 19th December, 1914, they were relieved from the line at Neuve Chapelle and went into reserve at Laventie. But their rest did not last long when on the following day they relieved the 2nd Royal Berkshire battalion in the trenches at Chapigny where they remained until 24th December. George Hollis was killed on 20th December, possibly during the relief which was often a time of extra danger. |
